हिन्दू धर्म के अनुसार जब किसी के घर में किसी की मृत्यु हो जाती है तो 13 दिन तक गरूड़ पुराण का पाठ रखते है। शास्त्रों के अनुसार कोई आत्मा तत्काल ही दूसरा जन्म धारण कर लेती है। किसी को 3 दिन तो किसी को 10 से 13 दिन तक भी लग जाते हैं और किसी को एक से सवा महीना लग जाता हैं। लेकिन जिसकी यादाश पक्की, मोह गहरा या अकाल मृत्यु मरा है तो उसे दूसरा जन्म लेने के लिए कम से कम एक साल लग जाता है।
तीसरे वर्ष उसका अंतिम तर्पण किया जाता है। फिर भी कई ऐसी आत्माएं होती हैं जिन्हें मार्ग नजर नहीं आता इसलिए वे हमेशा भटकती रहती है।
आओ जानते हैं कि लोगों के मरने के बाद क्यों रखते है गरुड़ पुराण का पाठ।
एक बार पक्षी राज गरुड़ ने भगवान विष्णु से, प्राणियों की मृत्यु, यमलोक यात्रा, नरक-योनियों तथा सद्गति के बारे में अनेक गूढ़ और रहस्य से भरे प्रश्न पूछे। गरुण के इन्हीं प्रश्नों का उत्तर भगवान विष्णु जी ने दिया। इन प्रश्न और उत्तर का जो सिलसिला चला वही बाद में गरुड़ पुराण के नाम से मशहूर हुआ।
गरुण पुराण के अंदर मृत्यु से पहले और बाद की स्थिति के बारे में लिखा गया है इसलिए इस पुराण को मृतक को सुनाया जाता है।
13 दिनों तक मृत व्यक्ति अपनों के बीच में ही रहता है। इस दौरान गरुढ़ पुराण का पाठ रखने से वह स्वर्ग-नरक, गति, सद्गति, अधोगति, दुर्गति आदि तरह की गतियों के बारे में जान जाता है।
आगे की यात्रा में उसे किन-किन बातों का सामना करना पड़ेगा, कौन से लोक में उसका जाना हो सकता है। यह सब बातें वह गरुड़ पुराण सुनकर जान जाता है।

जब मृत्यु के बाद घर में गरुड़ पुराण का पाठ होता है तो इस बहाने मृतक के परिजन यह जान लेते हैं कि बुराई क्या है और सद्गति किन कर्मों से मिलती है ताकि मृतक और उसके परिजन दोनों ही यह अच्छी तरह से जान लें कि उच्च लोक की यात्रा करने के लिए कौन से कर्म करने चाहिए।
गरुड़ पुराण हमें अच्छे कर्मों के लिए प्रेरित करता है। अच्छे कर्मों के करने से ही हमें सद्गति और मुक्ति की प्राप्ति हो सकती है।
गरुड़ पुराण के अंदर व्यक्ति के कर्मों के आधार पर दंड स्वरुप मिलने वाले विभिन्न नरकों के बारे में भी बताया गया है।
गरुण पुराण को हमें सुनकर उसके उपदेशों को जीवन में उतारना चाहिए। आत्मज्ञान को जानना ही गरुड़ पुराण का मुख्य विषय है।
गरूड़ पुराण में उन्नीस हजार श्लोक लिखे हुए हैं। इनमें से सात हजार श्लोक में गरूड़ पुराण में ज्ञान, धर्म, नीति, रहस्य, आत्म, स्वर्ग, नर्क और अन्य लोकों का के बारे में देखने को मिलता है।
इसमें भक्ति, ज्ञान, वैराग्य, निष्काम कर्म की महिमा के साथ यज्ञ, दान, तप तीर्थ जैसे शुभ कर्मों में सर्व साधारण के लिए अनेक लौकिक और पारलौकिक फलों का जिक्र भी किया गया है।
यह सभी बातें मृतक और उसके परिवार के लोग जानकर अपने जीवन में उतारके जीवन को सुंदर और मनमोहक बना सकते हैं।
इसके अलावा इसके अंदर आयुर्वेद, नीतिसार जैसे विषयों के जिक्र के साथ मृत जीव के अन्तिम समय में किए जाने वाले कर्मों का विस्तार से जिक्र भी किया गया है।
कहते हैं कि गरुढ़ पुराण का पाठ सुनने मात्र से ही मृतक आत्मा को शांति की प्राप्त हो जाती है और उसे मुक्ति का मार्ग भी पता चल जाता है।
वह अपने सारे संताप को भूलकर प्रभु मार्ग पर चलकर सद्गति प्राप्त कर या तो पितर लोक में चला जाता है या दोबारा से मनुष्य योनी में जन्म ले लेता है। उसे भूत प्रेत बनकर भटकना नहीं पड़ता ।
