गोर्की का जन्म एक बेहद साधारण परिवार में हुआ था। इन्होंने अपनी पहचान स्वयं बनाई और इन्होंने रूस के महान साहित्यकार, उपन्यासकार, कहानीकार के रुप में ख्याति पाई। रूस में एक सड़क का नाम इनके सम्मान में गोर्की स्ट्रीट के नाम से रखा गया है।
रूस और भारत दोनो की सामाजिक व्यवस्था तकरीबन एक जैसी ही थी। कर्ज में दबा हुआ पिछड़ा गरीब व्यक्ती ही साहूकार पर निर्भर होने के मजबूर होता था। वो बेचारा व्यक्ती साहूकार के ऋण जाल में ऐसे फंसता था जैसे मकड़ी अपना जाला बुनती हैं।
मजदूर आदमी ब्याज के मकड़ जाल में फंसने के बाद साहूकार का कर्जा चुका ही नहीं पाता था और समय बीतने के साथ साथ साहूकार का मूल धन और उसपे लगने वाला ब्याज बढ़ता ही चला जाता था जिसके कारण मजदूर आदमी का घर खर्च चलना तो दुभर होता ही था एक वक्त का खाना उसको बड़ी ही मुश्किल से मुनासिब हो पाता था। दिन प्रतिदिन घर की हालत बद से बदतर होती जाती थी।
